This isn't ordinary for European burial grounds where space is at a premium. In Germany
where the graves are likewise 12 layers profound, the gravestones stamp just
the best layer of the covered pine boxes. In the Old Jewish Cemetery in
Josefov, there are around 12,000 headstones, packed firmly together with no
grass between them. A portion of the headstones look like beds, similar to the
one on the left in the photo underneath.
